Samuel R. Boyd ~ Mary Pleamon Buck

Hill County, Texas

S. R. Boyd, of Hubbard City, Hill county, was born in Oktibbeha county, Mississippi, in 1853, the youngest of nine children of David Boyd, a native of South Carolina.  The latter removed to Mississippi in 1835, where he remained until his death in 1856.  He was a farmer by occupation, and during his residence in Mississippi he held the office of County Supervisor of Oktibbeha county.  His wife, the mother of our subject, was Miss Elizabeth Robinson, of South Carolina, and a daughter of John Robinson.  Only five of the children of Mr. and Mrs. Boyd, besides the one whose name head this sketch survive, viz.: Mrs. Mary (Boyd) Arnold, of Georgetown, Texas; Mrs. Lucretia (Boyd) Ethridge, of Limestone county; A. R. Boyd, a physician of Billington, Limestone county; and T. D. Boyd, a farmer and stockman at San Angelo, Tom Green Count.

The subject of this sketch, aside from his attendance at the country schools of his native county, spent three years at Cross Plains, Tennessee, and later took a one year's course in Vanderbilt University, at Nashville.  He was a very ambitious boy, but without sufficient means to procure his education, except by intervals at work and in School.  He passed the crucial test of a law examination in Choctaw county, Mississippi, was admitted to the bar, and located for practice at Chester, where he continued until 1885.  In that year he came to Texas, locating in Ellis county, where he engaged one year in merchandising, and then came to Hill county, where he followed the same business at Mt. Calm.  Two years later he removed to Hubbard City, where he now resides, and here he again resumed the practice of law.  In 1890 Mr. Boyd formed a partnership with T. B. Whorton, and engaged in real estate and insurance business; but Mr. Boyd still continued to practice his profession.  In April 1890, he was elected City Attorney of Hubbard City for a term of two years, is interested in the Artesian Well Company, in the Building Association, and is the attorney for both corporations.  He is secretary of the Masonic lodge, and the Keeper of the Records and Seal of the K. of P.

In 1883, Mr. Boyd married Miss Mary P. Buck, a cousin of Prof. Gorland Buck, Tax Collector of Hill county.  Three children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Boyd, as follows: Mary Eulalie Boyd, Samuel Theodore Boyd, and Maggie Pearl Boyd.  Mr. Boyd is an Elder in the old school Presbyterian Church, and has been identified with the organization since twenty one years old, and his wife is also a member and constant attendant of the same church.

Samuel R. Boyd ~ Mary Pleamon Buck

Hubbard City, Hill County, Texas

Samuel R. Boyd, Hubbard City, Representative of the Seventy-fifth District (Hill County) in the Twenty-seventh Legislature and, at this writing, a member of the legislative investigating committee created by that body, was born in Oktibbeha count, Mississippi, April 29, 1853, the son of David Boyd, a native of South Carolina, and Mrs. Elizabeth (Robinson) Boyd, of South Carolinian birth and ancestry; came to Texas in 1857 with his widowed mother, who located in Montgomery county; completed his literary education at Stonewall College, Cross Plains, Texas; took a course in the Law Department of Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee; was admitted to the bar in Choctaw county, Mississippi, in 1876, and practiced law there for ten years; and in 1886 returned to Texas and located in Hill county, where he has since been actively and successfully engaged in the practice of his profession.

He canvassed the section of the State in which he resides in the interest of Governor Hogg in the Hogg-Clark campaign of 1892, and in that and other contests won a reputation as an effective popular orator, second to that of few men in Texas.  He has been a delegate to every home precinct and county, and State convention since 1890.

As the Democratic nominee, he had two opponents for election to the Twenty-seventh Legislature, but defeated them by a vote of 4, 253 to a combined vote of 1,747 for them, a result that affords an index to his qualities as a campaigner, and popularity among the people who know him best.  He was a member of the following standing House committees: Finance, Penitentiaries, and Roads, Bridges, and Ferries, and chairman of the House committee appointed to investigate the condition and affairs of the State Reformatory at Gatesville.

He was married to Miss Mary Pleamon Buck, in Choctaw county, Mississippi, May 13, 1883, and has three children: Mary Eulalie Boyd, wife of Lee Frisby, Assistant County Attorney of Hill county and City Attorney of Hubbard City; Fred Boyd, and Maggie Pearl Boyd.

Mr. Boyd was himself city attorney of Hubbard City, and at the same time assistant county attorney of Hill county for four years.  He and his son-in-law are practicing law together under the firm name of Boyd & Frisby.

Mr. Boyd is a member of the O. S. Presbyterian Church, and Masonic, W. O. W., and K. of P. fraternities.

He made a record in the Legislature of which his constituents and friends over the State are justly proud, and will, it is believed, as a member of the investigating committee, acquit himself with equal credit.
