George Forest Boyd - Dora Eakin
McCaulley, Texas
by Margaret Boyd Hampton
My mother, Dora Eakin, came to West Texas in 1896 with her parents, Mr. and
Mrs, J.L. Eakin. The family moved from Hunt County because of my
grandmother's health. My grandaddy rented a whole box car, and brought his
family, all their belongings, as well as all the livestock they owned, They
got off the train in Merkel and made the trip to their new home by wagon. It
took a whole day to go from Merkel to the ranch, which is located just west
of where Hamlin is now. My mother returned to Greenville for one year to
attend Burleson College to get her teacher's certificate, and then returned
to West Texas, where she taught for three years at Gyp Hill.
She met and married (George) Forest Boyd of the Neinda community in 1901.
They settled on Preacher Webb's farm there. My sister, Allyne, and my
brother, John, were born there. They bought the farm near White Pond about
1906, During these busy and happy days, Mama and Papa cared for us and she
also boarded Mrs. Easterwood, a teacher at White Pond, and also Curtis
Martin, when he came there to teach, I was born there in 1915. During
this time, the family all took part in the church and community at McCaulley.
Some of our friends and neighbors were the Welborns, Jacksons, the Peacocks,
Galloways, Stephensons, also the Fanchers, the Mosses and the Drennons.
Allyne and John both attended White Pond School. Many of the children of the
families mentioned, all walked up that sandy road to school together.
