Robert Boyd, John Boyd Robert Boyd, a native of the Province of Ulster, Ireland, and of Scotch parentage, settled in the Cumberland Valley in what was afterwards Letterkenny township about the year 1737. He was a gentleman of education and influence on the "far frontiers" of the then Province of Pennsylvania. During the French and Indian war he was commissioned a captain in the Third battalion of the Provincial forces, Col. Hugh Mercer, his commission bearing date May 1, 1758, and participated in the Forbes expedition.
