In records from our James Madison Boyd's Civil War file I have copies
of the following Information:  He served in Co. F.,  53rd Regiment of Ky Mounted
Infantry.  James M.  Boyd's enlistment paper, dated October 17, 1864, Mustered in October 24, 1864 he enlisted for period of one year in Newport, KY.  He was 27 years of age when he enlisted.  He was employed as a bricklayer. Among various muster roll cards, one showed him in Paris, KY Oct 31, 1864. The May June 1865 card shows he was promoted from Pvt to Sgt.  May 3, 1865. There is a memorandum from prisoner of war records showing he was captured at Clinch River, VA,  Dec 15, 1865, paroled at Richmond, VA (Pemberton) Feb, 15, 1865.  He was furloughed  Mar 2, 1865 for 20 days to return to service on April 1, 1865.  He mustered out in Louisville, KY Sept, 15, 1865.   I have a lot of other information about him from the files when he requested a pension and his wife's application for widows pension.    Sue Taylor

A John W. Boyd received a limited education, and in August 1862, at
Hartford, enlisted in Company E, Twelfth Kentucky (Federal) Calvary, and
participated in all the engagements of the regiment during his term
of service; he was discharged in one year as brevet second lieutenant.
He afterward re-enlisted in the Seventeenth Kentucky Mounted Infantry,
at Owensboro, and served until September 1865, when he was discharged.
