See his civil war papers from Clayton Co in Elkader, IA. From Sept 9, 1861 - Oct 9, 1864 he was in IA Volunteers, Lexington KY. In Jan 23, 1865 he joined the U S Veteran Volunteers and Jan 23, 1866 he was discharged from Co H 4th Regt. Camp Chase, OH. He was listed as an engineer prior to his enlistment. Returned to IA and was a farmer after last discharge.  He was born Halifax Co., VA Feb 22 1822. He married Martha Appleton Jan 25 1847 in Bellbrook OH. He is buried in Edgewood Cemetery, Delaware Co., IA.
