Georgia Obituaries

Dear Boyd researchers and cousins,

The following are obits and marriages of various Boyds which appeared in the
Atlanta Constitution (the newspaper for Atlanta, Georgia) from 1925 to 1927. I
added notes to those I knew. I would appreciate it (and I'm sure all Boyd
researchers would too) if any who are related or connected to these Boyds could
add their research notes.

Judy K in Newnan, GA

The Atlanta Constitution, 18 June 1925

MRS. ALICE BOYD
Mrs. Alice Boyd, 41, of 307 Thompson Street, East Point, died Tuesday at
a local hospital. She is survived by her husband, W.M. Boyd; two sons, J.W.
and W.M. Boyd, Jr.; a daughter, Miss Alline Boyd; five sisters, Mrs. J.M. Boyd,
of Douglasville, Ga.; Mrs. F.C. Stallings, of Temple, Ga.; Mrs. Lottie Moore,
of Villa Rica, Ga.; Mrs. C.W. Frasier and Mrs. Dave McGuire, of Carrollton,
Ga., and two brothers, M.A. Duncan of Hewlett, Ga., and Wesley Duncan, of
Carrollton.

[Note: W.M. Boyd, husband of Alice Duncan Boyd, was Walter Monroe Boyd, the son of George White Boyd and Mary E. Pope, the grandson of Hugh Boyd and Nancy Hopper, and the great-grandson of Robert Boyd and Rosannah Stewart of Newberry, SC and Meriwether Co., GA. I believe Alice's daughter called "Alline" should actually be "Irene." Alice's sister, Mary E. Duncan, married Walter Monroe Boyd's brother, James Martin Boyd.]

The Atlanta Constitution, 26 Sept 1925

MRS. FLORENCE BOYD
Mrs. Florence Boyd, 39, of Cleveland drive, died Thursday night at a local hospital. She is survived by her husband, W.A. Boyd; her parents, Mr. and

WILLINGHAM-BOYD
Mrs. Elizabeth Willingham announces the engagement of her daughter, Alice
Bernice, to Lee Herrington Boyd, the ceremony to take place at an early date.

The Atlanta Constitution, 7 Feb 1926

MISS McCONNELL WEDS MR. BOYD
Miss Hazel McConnell, of College Park, and Carl C. Boyd, of East Point,
were married Saturday, January 30, at Carrollton, the Rev. Tatum, pastor of the
Methodist church, officiating. After February 8, Mr. and Mrs. Boyd will be at home to their friends at 322 Temple avenue, College Park.

[Note: Carl C. Boyd, b. abt 1905, was the son of LaFayette Randolph S. (Fett)
Boyd and Evie Anna Wheeler, the grandson of Christopher Columbus Boyd and
Sarah George Hannah Lambert, the great-grandson of Robert Boyd and Sarah Ann LeGuin, the great-great-grandson of Hugh Boyd and Nancy Hopper, and the
great-great-great-grandson of Robert Boyd and Rosannah Stewart of Newberry, SC and Meriwether County, GA. My mother says, if her memory serves her correctly, Carl served in the Navy.--JK]

MISS McCOY TO WED MR. MANGHAM AT DRUID HILLS BAPTIST
The marriage of Miss Lillie McCoy and David Boyd Mangham will take place
on June 26 at 5 o'clock at the Druid hills Baptist church. The ceremony will
be performed by Dr. F.C. McConnell, pastor. The bride will be given in marriage
by her father, Mr. Charles Jefferson McCoy. The ushers will be Douglas Mangham, Sam Mangham, Dr. Percy Lambright, and Eugene C. Clarke, Jr.
Miss Emily Boyd, of Griffin, Ga., beautiful cousin of the groom, will be
the only brides-maid. Little Opal Morris, cousin of the bride, will be the
flower girl. Miss McCoy is the second daughter of Charles Jefferson McCoy well
known business man formerly of Monroe, Gal., and the late Mrs. Alice Prather
McCoy, of Texarkana, Texas. David Boyd Mangham is the youngest son of John Woodward Mangham, Sr., and Miss Olive Boyd Mangham, formally (sic) well known and prominent residents of Griffin. Mr. Mangham is a graduate of Tech High school and attended Tech in the class of 1920. In 1922, Mr. Mangham became interested in the manufacture of high grade candies and is well known and popular with hosts of friends. John Woodward Mangham, Jr., will be his brother's best man. Mr. Mangham and his bride will leave immediately after the ceremony for a two-weeks' trip to the mountains. On their return they will reside with Mr. Mangham's parents at 645 W. Peachtree.

[Note: David Boyd Mangham and his cousin, Emily Boyd, are descendants of
Milton Boyd and Jane Douglas Boyd of Chester Co., SC and Meriwether County, GA. I believe researchers will find that most, if not all, of the Boyds living in the Griffin, Ga. area in the late 1800s and early 1900s were descended from Milton and Jane Boyd. Griffin is in Spalding County and Spalding is adjacent to Meriwether County where Milton and Jane resided.--JK]

The Atlanta Constitution, 14 Feb 1926

GEORGE G. BOYD DIES AT FAIRBURN HOME
Fairburn, Ga., February 13 — (Special.) — George G. Boyd, 34, prominent
groceryman here, died today following a week's illness of pneumonia. He is survived by his widow and three young children. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at Bethany Methodist church. He was a member of the Fairburn quartette, and was well known throughout this section of Georgia.

[Note: This was George Gardner Boyd, son of James LaFayette Boyd and Mary L.(Molly) Harper, and the grandson of James Boyd and Amelia (Milly) Tidwell who
married in Meriwether County, GA. in 1831. James Boyd came with his father,
John "Wagonner Jack" Boyd from Newberry, SC to Meriwether Co., GA about 1828 and lived in lot 265 right on the Flint River separating Meriwether and Pike
Counties. Wagonner Jack was the son of John "Buckles" Boyd and Margaret Wilson. John "Buckles" father, of course, is said to be John Boyd of Ballymena, County Antrim, Ireland, and Newberry Co., SC. Unless I have missed some communication somewhere, I don't believe any hard proof has ever been found that definitely says those children generally accepted to be John Sr.'s children are actually his. However, proof has been found linking David, Hugh, and John Boyd (Jr.) as brothers. There is some evidence showing that Elizabeth Boyd Spence may have been their sister, and she is generally accepted as John's daughter. I still maintain that enough evidence exists to link my Robert as another son of John Sr.--JK]

The Atlanta Constitution, 17 July 1926

Meriwether county; a few years after her marriage to Mr. Boyd, who was at that time clerk of the inferior and superior courts in Meriwether, they moved to Griffin where Mr. Boyd became cashier of a bank; a blurred final paragraph ends saying it is a singular coincidence that she should have died just a year to the day (Jan. 23rd) from the time of the death of Mr. J. D. Boyd.

                                 Judson Herndon Boyd

 Walker County Messenger

In memory of Brother Jud Boyd, who departed this life May 7, 1940.  He
was 39 years old.  He leaves a wife, three children, father and sister, who are mourned at his passing, but are comforted by the thoughts of the life he lived.   Brother Boyd was of a quiet, unassuming disposition, but was ever ready to do a good deed in the name of his Master and for his fellowman.  He was loyal to the church of his choice, and its membership in every respect.
Be it resolved:  That the church has lost one if its truest and most conscientious members; that the community has lost one of its most trusted and tried friends.  We would say to his family, "Weep not, for your loss is God's eternal gain."
The Lord gave to you - him
                         For just a short while
                       To live this life noble,
                         With trusting and a smile.

                       And then He saw fit,
                         To take him away,
                       And end his great suffering
                         For just one more day.

Obit: Nathan Boyd - 1891 - Pike County, Georgia

The Pike County Journal
Zebulon, Georgia, Friday, October 30, 1891

A Good Man Dies

It is with deep regret that we have this week to chronicle the death of
one of Pike's oldest and best men, Mr. Nathan Boyd, who lived a few
miles south of here at Fincher's church, at which place he had been a
useful member for sixty years. Mr. Boyd lived to a ripe old age, being
85 years old. During his long life, he never drank a drop of whiskey,
and for sixty years had not taken a dose of medicine of any kind.

ALLEN'S MILLS News

We regret to announce the death of Uncle Joseph Boyd. He breathed his
last, last Saturday night, 2nd inst. at sixteen minutes before eleven o'clock.
Death is always sad, but with our departed friend it was particularly so, as
he was very anxious to make some statement to the family but was unable
to articulate a single word. He had not spoken for several days before his death.

A few facts in regard to this aged one will not be uninteresting. He was born in South Carolina on the 26th day of June 1791. Had he lived to the 26th of this month, he would have been eighty-six years old. He moved to Georgia fifty-three years ago this fall and settled near where the beautiful little city of Griffin now stands. Remained there a year or so, when the state land surveyors commenced to survey the county of Meriwether. He moved to that county before the survey was completed and settled in the northeast corner of it.

There he remained for nearly thirty years; when for the want of more lands,
which he could not get there to suit him, he came to Carroll county and
settled about twelve miles northeast of Carrollton, on or near the Atlanta road, and resided there or near by with his children, to the time of his death.

He bore his affliction, which was very severe, for about seven months,
without a murmur and was perfectly resigned at all times to the will of Him
who rules all things. I am informed by a gentleman who has been intimately
acquainted with him for fifty years, that he was never known to utter a word
of reproach against anyone. He made a good neighbor and was in every
way worthy the confidence he naturally won.

His burial was attended by an unusual large concourse of relatives and friends. The burial ceremonies were performed by Dr. H.C. Timmons, assisted by Elder Jehu Tyson and were very appropriate and touching. Too much praise cannot be given his son-in-law Mr. A. Tyson, with whom he spent his last sad days, for the faithful services he rendered both day and night. He never flinched from his duty to him, but sacrificed his own interest for the welfare of his wife's parents. Allen's Mills, June 5, 1877.
