Meriwether County Land Records 1830-1923

These were taken from the Grantee Index, from 1827 to the present, books located in the office of the Superior Court Judge, Meriwether County Courthouse.

For those who are just beginning, the Grantee is the person who received, or purchased, the land. The Grantor is the person who sold the land. Since I was looking for specific Boyds, I didn't write down the acreage and land lots for the first few, until I realized how helpful this information might be to others.

I did write down the deed book and page number, the district and date of filing/record. The first entry is the earliest recorded Boyd transaction, that is, the first Boyd who bought land in Meriwether County. Many of these Boyds moved to Carroll county, died and are buried there.

In most cases, the date of instrument (the day the two persons actually sat down at the table and made the deal) was a few days before the deed was filed. However, in some cases, it was years before. Again, I did not get all the dates of instrument. When running the letters/numbers together would be confusing, I put a dash (-) between them. But most of the books are abbreviated (i.e., J434 would be book J, page 434).

I hope this may help some of you (like me) who are trying to separate all the different Boyds in Meriwether, most of whom came from Newberry Dist., SC. Mine specifically is the family of Robert Boyd, who married Rosannah Stewart, and died in Meriwether County in 1846. Most, if not all of Robert's children who were with him in Meriwether, moved to Carroll County.

You may find copies of these original records at the Meriwether Courthouse, on microfilm at the Georgia Archives, or most likely on microfilm at your local LDS Family History Center. The deed book and page number should point the way. The first two entries will show the format I used. Happy hunting and good luck! -- Judy Kilgore

BOYD, John, purchased land in the 10th Dist., from LEVERETT, Duncan, recorded/filed 25 Dec 1830, Book A, p. 414

BOYD, John, purchased land in the 9th Dist., from HANNER, James A., recorded/filed 10 Mar 1834, Book C, p. 165

BOYD, Milton, purchased land in the 8th Dist. from MOORE, William, r/f 8 Sep1834, C353

BOYD, ROBERT, 9th Dist, from BUTLER, John (estate sale), r/f 25 Sep 1834, C377. Date of instrument on this transaction was 7 Jan 1834. The land was an entire land lot (no. 269, 202.5 acres) and Robert purchased it for $250. John

Butler of Elbert County drew the land in the 1827 land lottery and it was originally in Troup County. John died and the land was put up for public sale by Martha Butler, his wife and executrix, as ordered by the court, and Robert was the highest bidder. This transaction also may be recorded in Elbert County probate records as part of John Butler's estate, as that is the way the deed begins ... "Georgia, Elbert County ..." However, it was recorded in Meriwether since that is where the land was located. In Robert's will, this is the land he described as leaving to his heirs ... "Lot. No. 269 in the Ninth District, formerly Troup now Meriwether ..." The land is located in the Upper Ninth District, in the extreme northeastern corner of the county, almost adjacent to Pike County. I have a copy of this deed if anyone wants one. Most of my Boyds were in that section of Meriwether County (upper 9th). It is near Mt. Carmel Methodist Church.

BOYD, John, 9th Dist., from STANFORD, Joshua T., r/f 26 Jan 1835, C470

BOYD, Joseph, 9th Dist., L(and) L(ot) 270, from BOYD, William, r/f 24 Apr 1835, D84

BOYD, James, 9th Dist., LL 265, 50 acres, from BOYD, John Sr., r/f 18 April 1835, D74

(I believe this to be the James Boyd who married Amelia (Millie) Tidwell and moved to Fayette County. If so, the John Sr. above would probably be John "Waggoner Jack" Boyd, the colorful rascal described in George Hugh Boyd's book, "Our Boyd Family, Allied families ...." and whose family connected to the DeGraffenried line.)

Hugh Boyd was my maternal GGG grand-          father.Martin Owens was my paternal GGG grandfather. Who would have thought their GG grandchildren would meet and marry nearly 100 years later (1935) in Fulton County?)

BOYD, Alston, 11TH Dist, LL238, 202.5 ac, from MILLS, Richard, sheriff, r/f 7 Nov 1843, H143

BOYD, William, 9th Dist., LL269, 202.5 ac, from BOYD, Robert, r/f 10 Feb 1845, H380

(Apparently Robert, father of William above, sold all the land he purchased earlier from John Butler's estate, to his oldest son, William. The date of instrument [the date Robert signed over the land] was 2 Nov 1843, more than a year before the transaction was filed with the court.)

BOYD, J.W., 2nd Dist., LL181, 202.5 ac, from GODWIN, W.H., r/f 19 July 1923, 19-264

All remaining deeds for Boyds are after 1927 and none are in the 9th District ... so I stopped looking. Mine were gone by 1860, having moved to Carroll County, but apparently some still owned land there up until the late 1800s. I believe the Boyd/Edge transactions involve Carroll County Boyds.
