Capt. Thomas Boyd, of South Carolina

I have found reference twice to "Captain Thomas Boyd," over 100 years apart.  The older one had a son named Thomas Boyd who was married twice but had no children from either marriage.  I am trying to determine if the second Capt. Thomas Boyd is the same person as Thomas Boyd, Jr., son of Capt. Thomas Boyd.  Can anyone help?  Here are the two references:

"Captain Thomas Boyd, a prominent planter of Lexington [SC] district, and living near 'Spring Hill,' was born about 1750.  He was a patriot in the Rev. War.  For several years he held the office of Justice of the Quorum for that district.  He married Eve Anne Summer, daughter of Frances [Francis?] Summer, a soldier of the Rev. in the SC Continentals and a son of the pioneer, John Adam Summer.  Their children were: Esther (married David Richardson), Margaret (married Jacob Lindler), Janette (married Dampsey [Dempsey?] Busby), Jane, Robert C., and Thomas Jr.   James C. married the widow of John George Houseal (Mary Margaret Summer, daughter of Colonel John Adam Summer, Jr.).    Robert C. moved to GA.  Thomas Boyd, Jr. married first, Miss Souseal, and second Miss Eleazer.  There were no children from either marriage."

Newberry County,  SC Historical and Genealogical Society,  page 197 George Leland Summer, Sr.

The second reference was taken from the August 7, 1877 issue of Southern
Christian Advocate 1867-1878 (it's a wedding announcement):   "By Rev. J. E. Watson, Jul 28, 1877, at the residence of Capt. Thom. Boyd, Mr. W. H. Hough, of Newberry, to Miss Mary Jacobs of Lexington, SC."

"Captain Thomas Boyd" and "Lexington" SC are mentioned in both.  Can someone confirm or deny a relationship between these  two Captain Thomas
BOYDs?  Does someone know which church denomination published the
Southern Christian Advocate?
