Agnes Sandilands Boyd

Hamilton and Lesmahagow, Lanark, Scotland

Hello all

After considering all options I finally bit the bullet and used the services
of a researcher (very reasonable) and have made a little headway with my
Boyd's in Govan, ( William Mears and Agnes Sandilands Boyd) and am
posting results just in case anyone spots a connection.

1855 Scottish certificates give extra information not found in later years
From 1856 to 1860 date and place of marriage is not given
"ms" maiden surname is standard form on Scottish Certificates

James Boyd born 28th Feb 1855 7pm at 18 Millar Sreet Hamilton
Father Robert Boyd, baker, aged 36 born Lesmahagow Married 1845 Lesmahagow 3 boys and 1 girl living Mother Agnes Boyd ms Sandilands aged 29 born at Lesmahagow her 4th child Informant Robert Boyd father.

Janet Boyd born 27th May 1857, 3pm at 12 Holmes Street Hamilton
Parents as above Henry Boyd born 11th April 1859 3pm at 12 Holmes Street Hamilton Parents as above. Euphemia Boyd born 7th Dec 1862 3.30am at 12 Holmes Street Hamilton States parents as above married September 17th 1845 Lesmahagow

1861 Census 12 Holm Street Hamilton
Robert Boyd baker ( journeyman ) born Lesmahagow, age 41
Agnes Boyd wife 34 born Lesmahagow
John Boyd son 14 scholar born Lesmahagow
Robert Boyd son 12 scholar born Lesmahagow
James Boyd son 6 scholar born Hamilton
Janet Boyd daug 3 born Hamilton
Henry Boyd son 1 born Hamilton

As can be seen my Agnes Sandilands Boyd does not appear on the above census but was found on the following. (identity of one brother missing)

1851 Census Barrin Street Strathaven
Robert Boyd 31 baker born Lesmahagow
Agnes Boyd wife 24 born lesmahagow
John Boyd son 4 born Lesmahagow
Robert Boyd son 2 born Lesmahagow
Agnes Boyd dau 1month born Hamilton - My ancestor
Euphemia Sandilands servant unm 20 born Lesmahagow

The 1851 Census was taken on 31st March so at least I know Agnes was born end of January or early February.  Unfortunately no record of Agnes's birth or her parents marriage was found which could be put down to religous reasons. They were members of a "dissenting" Presbyterian church while these were often recorded - it would seem not in this case.

Entry for the death of Robert Boyd father Robert Boyd married, died 18th June 1864 11.45pm at 12 Holm Street Hamilton aged 44. Parents Robert Leggatt ( occupation not shown )and Janet Leggatt. ms Boyd cause of death typhoid fever, pyemia 11 weeks. informant John Boyd son

Entry of his Birth -  in Lesmahagow parish baptismal register
Robert Ligate - James Ligate's and Janet Boyd's natural child born 25 Jany,
baptised 9 May 1819. It would appear Robert was illegitimate though in Scottish law he would be legitimated if his parents subsequently married. As yet I have not found a marriage for James and Janet.

After the death of  Robert, Agnes Boyd ms Sandilands remarried a Mr Robertson but again a marriage was not found

Parents of Agnes Sandilands - John Sandilands and Agnes Main.
Lesmahagow/Dalserf Lanark, siblings Euphemia Logan, Jane, Janet, Grace.
